The Nursing School of Coimbra (ESEnfC) resulted from the merger of the Escola Superior de Enfermagem Dr. Ângelo da Fonseca (founded in 1881) and the Escola Superior de Enfermagem de Bissaya Barreto (founded in 1971) in 2006. The School has scientific, pedagogical, administrative, financial and patrimonial, without political, social or religious restraints.
The ESEnfC, as a higher education institution, is a centre for the creation, diffusion, criticism and transmission of culture, science and technology, developing its activities in several domains. It has recently been designated as World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Nursing Research and Practice, and one of its functions is to produce knowledge on best education practices, including use of simulation in nurses’ training. This designation provides an important international recognition of its potential to produce and disseminate knowledge in this area.
The ESEnfC hosts the Health Sciences Research Unit: Nursing (UICISA:E) that aims to develop scientific research in health sciences, specifically in the nursing field. This unit is accredited by the Foundation for Science and Technology.
The ESEnfC also hosts the Journal of Nursing “Referência”, a peer reviewed scientific journal, edited by the UICISA:E in order to disseminate scientific knowledge produced in the specific field of nursing science with an interdisciplinary approach encompassing education, life sciences and health sciences.
UICISA:E also integrates several national and international projects and have a component dedicated to the dissemination of knowledge who carry out the dissemination by articles with impact factor, journals papers, posters, etc. The school also has a department of communication and image that disseminates through the national media the results of the several projects, publishing annually more than a hundred of news. The increase of number of researchers and also the number of funds projects generate a great impact in the community with more national and international reputation with more sustainability.
In order to show the importance of the simulation in the nursing education, since 2007 the ESEnfC intended to purchase different kind of simulators to improve the teaching, learning and assessment methodsby using the simulation as a pedagogical strategy. Now, the ESEnfC has a Simulation Centre with different kinds of simulators (e.g. low, medium and high fidelity), recent health care equipment and capacity to record the simulated scenarios. All the equipment is supported by recent/proper technology and software that allows the disclosure the value of simulation to enhance teaching and learning in nursing education. Since then, our team try to make the: systematization of scientific evidence; production of teaching materials, testing and validate them; implementation of simulated clinical experiences in different levels of graduation; analysis of the educators/students benefits using the simulation.
The school hold several international and national fund projects as Portugal2020, SAICT, and Erasmus+, KA2, FCT and are partner of WHO. The ESEnfC was designated by the WHO in July 2014, for a period of four years, as Collaborating Centre for Nursing Practice and Research. The Areas of Expertise of the Collaborating Center for Nursing Practice and Research: Simulated practices; Health Literacy; Nursing Education.
